Bouncy Castle Development Platform: The Resonator by Simon Jones supported by SoundNetwork is a project prototype debuting at If Only at the Bluecoat next week, part of a new SoundNetwork initiative FairgroundFrameworks ( a nod to OpenFrameworks) which uses fairground technology as a context to support artist’s new work.
In the wake of Jeremy Deller’s pre-emptively awesome Sacrilege at Glasgow International this weekend (like minds eh?) artist Simon Jones will be testing his prototype sound system that turns a bouncy castle into a giant sub bass haptic feedback sensor and speaker.
Low-frequency feedback is channeled through the surface of the castle, so by lying or jumping on the bouncy castle, participants change the sound. When more than one person is on the castle, the changes each makes will impact on the other, allowing for interaction not just with the artwork itself, but with other participants, allowing a kind of gameplay to develop.
Following this prototype Simon will be building a bespoke bouncy castle filled with sensors and a sub bass surround soundsystem. Look out for it in Liverpool this summer.
The project will become an OpenHardware project and a physical 'development platform' for artists and creative technologists to experiment with interaction. Simon's application for the platform is called the Resonator and uses the inflated membrane to play with low frequency sound.
Part of SoundNetwork’s ongoing mission to negotiate playful, critical and social spaces to support artists making work.
